Q&A with…WITCH CULT

WITCH CULT ARE A MYSTERIOUS BAND INDEED. NOT MUCH IS KNOWN ABOUT THEM OTHER THAN THEY HAVE A SINGLE SIDED 12” COMING OUT ON HOLY ROAR RECORDS AT SOME POINT IN 2011.

THEIR ONLY RECORDED OUTPUT IS THE CRUSHING TRACK “BURN” FROM HOLY ROAR’S SUMMER SAMPLER, WHICH IS STILL UP FOR FREE DOWNLOAD FROM THE HOLY ROAR RECORDS WEBSITE.

I SPOKE TO A MEMBER OF WITCH CULT BY EMAIL AND THE RESULTS ARE BELOW.

ME: So Witch Cult, what’s with all the mystery?! I was talking about you guys to a friend the other day and he described you as “The Slipknot of #UKSWELL”.

????: We liked the idea of people not knowing who it was and trying to guess, it was pretty much just a joke to begin with. We also really wanted to make a point of it just being about this band and not what bands people are/have been in as well. People guessing in the early days threw up some funny results, and people still think one particular person is in the band. People have asked him about releases and stuff. Tell your friend thank you very much for that comment, that’s amazing. Powerviolence for the maggots.

ME: All that most people have heard from you guys will have been your awesome, brutal contribution to Holy Roars “Holy Hell” sampler Burn. When can we hear more?

????: On our one sided 12” that will be out soon. It’s taken alot longer to get this thing ready than we would have liked but it shouldn’t be much longer before people can hear it.

ME: How does Witch Cult’s writing process work?

????: We get together at practice and write most of the stuff there. People will bring in various ideas but most of the writing takes place at practice. We usually record rough demos that I take away to write lyrics for.

ME: Your Facebook page gives away some influences; Integrity, Spazz, Trash Talk and Fall Of Efrafa (and The Minutemen). Are these shared influences? Do you guys have any influences that may surprise people?

????: Those are basically just individual’s favourite bands. Some, like Spazz, have had a huge influence on our sound, but I think you’d be hard pressed to find much Fall Of Efrafa in our sound though, our whole set is about as long of one of their songs. I don’t think the bands that influence us would surprise anyone, but I think between us we definately listen to stuff that people wouldn’t expect.

ME: Witch Cult has had a lot of, what some people might call HYPE which I think has been brought on my the air of mystery behind it all. From all accounts, I am yet to experience one, your live performance backs it up though but has this level of interest created any haters?

????: I’m sure there is some but there isn’t many that have been really vocal about it so far, other than a few amusing things on the internet. We don’t make music for everyone and we completely expect for people it hate it, so if a lot of “haters” come out of the woodwork it wouldn’t surprise or bother us one bit.

ME: It’s nice to see you have some split records planned for the future and you’ve just done a limited edition tape. I think split records/tapes/’zines and a general D.I.Y ethic is massively important in todays world of major labels and pop charts but I think the internet could eventually kill off the “human” element to all of it. What do you guys think?

????: I think that the internet is the best tool any DIY minded band/label/whatever can have. As long as you still go to shows and people still put out physical copies of music, it only helps make the human element stronger. I’ve heard alot of people at the moment say that where ever you go to a gig in the UK at the moment you end up being around friends, and I definately think the internet helps and cements these friendships. I you remember that behind every blog, label, band and zine on the internet is a music fan, I think the human element is hard to avoid.

“FAST, SLOW!!!”
